GMail Filter, “hacking little things in life”

You can do really fun things with gMail, and see some amazing things features that are not well known to us. Take few minutes every day to keep yourself organized and efficient!

You can hold shift!

1) Click on one item 2) hold shift and 3) click on the last item. Just like in your OS, you can select multiple items.

Filters can be applied to the Advance search in real time.

from: Used to specify the sender
Example: from:amy
Meaning: Messages from Amy

to: Used to specify a recipient
Example: to:david
Meaning: All messages that were sent to David (by you or someone else)

subject: Search for words in the subject line
Example: subject:dinner
Meaning: Messages that have the word “dinner” in the subject

OR Search for messages matching term A or term B*
*OR must be in all caps
Example: from:amy OR from:david
Meaning: Messages from Amy or from David


(hyphen) Used to exclude messages from your search
Example: dinner -movie
Meaning: Messages that contain the word “dinner” but do not contain the word “movie”

” ”
(quotes) Used to search for an exact phrase*
*Capitalization isn’t taken into consideration
Example: “i’m feeling lucky”
Meaning: Messages containing the phrase “i’m feeling lucky” or “I’m feeling lucky”

Example: subject:”dinner and a movie”
Meaning: Messages containing the phrase “dinner and a movie” in the subject

OR Search for messages matching term A or term B*
*OR must be in all caps
Example: from:amy OR from:david
Meaning: Messages from Amy or from David

email@gmail.com -label:project-ryerson-chemical-engineering AND -label:Project-YMCA-Swim-Club

Since it is !AND, it will:
Find all email from email@gmail.com excluding the label in folder Project/Ryerson-Chemical-Engineering
along with all email from email@gmail.com excluding the label in folder Project/YMCA-Swim-Club

Find all email with word YMCA änd with no label
e.g.
YMCA has:nouserlabels

Clearing all labled items from inbox
e.g.
label:inbox has:userlabels
